Zagreb's Sights and Attractions
Planning your trip to Zagreb? Here are a few of our suggestions for the top things to do here...
- Museums: The are many museums in easy walking distance of the hostel. Unique ones include The Croatian Museum of Naive Art and Zagreb City Museum. Also worth checking out is the Meštrović Atelier, dedicated to the world famous Croatian sculptor Ivan Meštrović who went on to create famous works in the US.
-Parks: A short walk from the hostel will take you to the botanical gardens with over 10,000 different plant species. On the way you'll pass Zagreb's famous "green horseshoe" of parks filled with monuments and fountains. A short tram ride east on #11 or #12 will take you to Zagreb's largest park, Maksimir. The first and one of the largest promenade parks in southeast Europe is filled with monuments, lakes, rivers, shady woods, and is also home to the city zoo.
-Lake Jarun: Only a fifteen minute ride on tram #17 going west. Here you can find where most residents of Zagreb escape to on the hot summer days: two large lakes for swimming, kayaking, canoeing, skating, cycling, etc... Also a great spot for nightlife after midnight- just be sure to plan on a taxi to return to the center if you're returning late.
-Miragoj: A beautiful cemetary located just north of the center, get there with bus #106 from Kaptol. Interesting architecture and a beautiful layout makes it one of the most unique cemetaries in Europe.
-Food & Drink: The open market, known as Dolac, is located just across from the hostel. Here you can find fresh domestic fruits, veggies, meats, oils and honey, cheeses and flowers. Zagreb's streets are lined with cafes that are full through the afternoon, perfect for taking a rest. Also try some of the typical Croatian foods- ask us for resturant recommendations!
